Francesco Caruso, PhD

Dr. Caruso´s scientific efforts focus on studying the dynamics of marine ecosystems using non-invasive techniques. He studied Marine Biology and Ecology at University of Messina (Italy) and he attended the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioacoustics and Environmental Research at University of Pavia (Italy). During his master´s and doctoral studies, he joined a multidisciplinary research group engaged in underwater acoustics at the National Institute of Nuclear Physics (INFN - Italy). He has participated in the installation of multidisciplinary seafloor stations and acoustic data analysis as part of several National and European projects. He has been a visiting student, postdoctoral researcher and guest investigator at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI - USA), working on the application of bio-logging tags to gain insights into marine animal behavior and aquatic locomotion.

Dr. Caruso has also worked at the National Research Council (CNR - Italy) and was a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute of Deep-sea Science and Engineering (IDSSE -

China). His main investigation technique is passive acoustic monitoring (PAM), and his scientific questions focus on fundamental ecological questions (e.g., species distribution, biodiversity, effects of human activities). Dr. Caruso has authored and co-authored numerous scientific publications in international peer-review journals. A member of the Society for Marine Mammalogy and the European Cetacean Society, he is also vice president of eConscience (https://www.econscience.earth), a non-profit organization engaged in science outreach and environmental education projects.
